You're Making Us Proud Portland.

The Portland Red Cross received an incredible gift to help us celebrate the first day of Red Cross Month!

See the photo to the right? That's not just another cluttered desk - each slip of paper (blurred for privacy) in this massive stack represents a person's commitment to donating blood or platelets, getting trained in CPR/1st Aid, volunteering for disaster relief, providing financial assistance, or a combination of these lifesaving actions.

This overwhelming response came as a result of two recent outreach events in the city. Wow.

To all of you Portlanders who have a long history of supporting us, are just recently commiting to help or are considering that first step in making a difference for those in need, we thank you.

Saving. Giving. Living. Join In.

February: Red Cross Partners with Body Worlds and the Brain!

Starting Friday, the Red Cross is partnering with Gunther von Hagens’ Body Worlds and the Brain! All blood and platelet donors who present to donate on Friday or Saturday during the month of February at the Portland, Salem, or Vancouver Red Cross donor centers will receive a free ticket to the Body Worlds and the Brain exhibit.

Appointments are preferred and you can schedule your donation appointment online at a Body Worlds blood drive or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

All-New Exhibition
BODY WORLDS & The Brain includes more than 200 authentic human specimens—including entire bodies, individual organs, and transparent body slices—preserved through von Hagens’ plastination process. This all-new presentation highlights neuroscience, brain development, and performance and invites profound reflection on the power, beauty, and fragility of the amazing human body and brain. Specimens on display stem from body donors, individuals who donated their bodies specifically to the Institute for Plastination.

Exhibition location information:
OMSI 1945 SE Water Ave. Portland, OR 97214
503-797-4000 I www.omsi.edu/bodyworlds

Hours of operation:
Sunday – Thursday 9:30am – 5:30pm
Friday – Saturday 9:30am – 9:00pm

Donor eligibility involves minimum age, weight and health requirements. Donors must present a donor card, driver's license or two other forms of ID prior to donation. Individuals unable to donate blood can still make a contribution by sponsoring a Red Cross blood drive or volunteering with a local Red Cross Blood Services Region, making a financial contribution, or by learning more about the American Red Cross Humanitarian Services.

Our website's First-Time Donor section includes information about what to expect when giving blood, tips for a successful donation, and an explanation of what happens to your donated blood.

Snow, Winds, Rain, and Floods, Oh, My! Blood Donors Needed.

Winter weather has taken its toll with a quadruple punch of snow, winds, rain, and flooding in the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately, this nasty weather has led to numerous missed appointments and a serious decline in blood donations.

Schedule your appointment at a blood drive near you or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

It’s the blood that is already on the shelves that helps save lives before, during and after more extreme weather conditions, so the Red Cross is urging immediate blood and platelet donations in areas where it’s safe for donors to do so.

Since platelets have a shelf-life of just five days, it is imperative that there are enough platelets on hand to meet the needs of patients across the country.

Nationwide, around 44,000 blood donations are needed each and every day to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients, and children with blood disorders. These patients and others rely on blood products during their treatment. If blood collections are negatively impacted by winter weather, the long-term care needs of these patients could also be affected.

When winter weather strikes, this need does not diminish, even though blood donors may find it difficult or impossible to get to a convenient donation opportunity. If people will make an appointment to donate blood in the upcoming days and weeks ahead, blood will be available should conditions prohibit people from traveling or coming to blood drives.

It is crucial that we build our blood supply for all patients in need and regain a sufficient supply for the unexpected. Please help now. Make a blood donation appointment online or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Teen Battles Sickle Cell Anemia Through Education and Volunteer Efforts

Latay Hammick, 13, promotes the need for donors as she herself faces a blood disorder. Read Latay's full story in The Skanner and give patients a fighting chance; donate with the Red Cross and join the Be The Match and Donate Life Northwest registries.

MLK Blood, Bone Marrow, and Organ, Eye and Tissue Donor Registry Drives will be held in Salem and Bend on January 16 and January 21 in Portland

Those who wish to speak to Latay Hammick, her family, or a Be The Match or Donate Life Northwest representative in person will have the opportunity to do so at Portland's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blood, Bone Marrow, and Organ, Eye and Tissue Donor Registry Drive. This important event takes place on Saturday, January 21 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Red Cross Portland Donor Center (3131 N. Vancouver Avenue).

Also at the Portland event will be Donate Life Northwest heart recipient Rosie Tabb. Rosie has worked as an American Red Cross donor recruiter and received blood transfusions during her heart transplant. To make a potentially lifesaving blood donation at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blood, Bone Marrow, and Organ, Eye and Tissue Donor Registry Drive, please call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., community members can donate blood, learn more about bone marrow, organ, eye, and tissue donation, and sign up for the donor registries at all three events. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blood, Bone Marrow, and Organ, Eye and Tissue Donor Registry Drives are co-hosted by the American Red Cross, Be The Match and Donate Life Northwest.

All participants at this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blood, Bone Marrow, and Organ, Eye and Tissue Donor Registry Drives will receive a free Martin Luther King, Jr. commemorative lapel pin (while supplies last). These blood drives will also give donors the chance to speak with the Red Cross about our volunteer programs, get informed about disaster preparedness, and share with other volunteers about programs that they may be involved in.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. symbolized equal access for all. This includes equal opportunity for the lifesaving gift of blood, bone marrow and organ, eye and tissue transplants. You can make an incredible difference with your donation.

The Perfect Gift

You can gift wrap a sweater. You can place a bow on a shiny new bicycle. You can fill a gift bag with holiday cookies. One thing you can’t put in a box and place under the tree is the perfect gift – a lifesaving blood donation.

When you donate blood, you give the perfect gift - another hug, another laugh, another smile, another chance - to someone in need of blood.

Think outside the box this holiday season. The perfect gift is at your nearest American Red Cross blood drive or blood donation center. And, unlike the latest fashion trend, video game or golf club, the perfect gift costs nothing but an hour of your time.

Give the perfect gift and help a family member, friend or someone you’ve never met unwrap a lifetime of memories.

The Red Cross is proud to present “The Perfect Gift,” a video highlighting the importance of blood donation. Hopefully, it inspires you to give blood this holiday season and throughout the year. Call 1-800 RED CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment today.

UO Ducks Win the Civil War Blood Drive Competition

Final Civil War Blood Drive Score: Ducks 3,416 – Beavers 3,173

The ten-year anniversary of the Civil War Blood Drive was a fierce competition this year and the numbers show how close the pursuit was to capture the annual trophy and bragging rights. The final numbers show that the University of Oregon Ducks prevailed with a 243 point difference. The Ducks had 3,416 blood drive ballots cast, the Oregon State University Beavers came in very close with 3,173 ballots entered.

For the second year in a row, the Ducks have been victorious in the Civil War Blood Drive. To view the full history of the blood drive campaign, visit civilwarblooddrive.com. The need for blood is constant; and it is especially important to have an ample supply during the winter season. For those wanting to help hospital patients by donating blood, please call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org to schedule your appointment. If you would like to make an appointment to donate platelets at the Clark County, Portland, or the Richland, Washington donor centers, please call 1-800-787-9691.

It is important to remember that the real winners of this healthy competition are hospital patients who are in need of blood and platelet transfusions throughout the year. Many people helped to facilitate making our ten-year Civil War Blood Drive anniversary a success. To all those who partnered, created, volunteered, promoted, supported, collected or gave blood and platelets, we are exceedingly thankful for your support.

A Marriage With A Mission

Having worked a summer job as a sports camp counselor, one might think back on memorable baseball games, dodgeball and maybe even a first bee sting. Few would assume, however, that a summer camp would be the location where one locks eyes with a future husband or wife.

For Tim and Rachelle Overholser, who met as counselors from rival high schools at camp, the connection was instant. They began spending time together and started dating later on, maintaining a long distance relationship across the California/Oregon border for three years.

Beyond a love for sports that jump-started Rachelle and Tim’s relationship, they also began an incredible commitment to “date nights” as platelet donors at the Red Cross. This tradition, which started about four years ago when Rachelle would come up to visit Tim in Portland, grew into a cause they felt very strongly about, especially as they began their wedding planning.

“As we planned for our wedding, we knew we wanted to incorporate the American Red Cross,” Rachelle said. “With all of our positive experiences in donating, we wanted to give back on our special day, and help share the need with our guests.”

Tim and Rachelle decided that, in lieu of wedding guest favors, they instead wanted to donate their funds as a monetary gift to the Red Cross. That wasn’t the end of the couple’s outstanding generosity. Upon Tim and Rachelle’s request, the Red Cross also created personalized table cards explaining their appeal for donations to wedding guests, along with information about apheresis and blood donation.

After an awe-inspiring marriage ceremony, the overjoyed newlyweds took a few moments to talk about continuing their platelet donation date nights…or afternoons, as Rachelle put it, in Portland. “The staff is awesome…and you get to know them,” Tim said. “They do a great job of taking care of you. I always feel comfortable.”

“Even if I can’t donate because of something like low iron, they still arrange for me to sit by Tim and finish a movie,” Rachelle agreed. “I think they’re just happy you’re there.”

Tim and Rachelle no longer have long distance to worry about for future date nights they’re both involved with work and school at Concordia University…just down the street from the Portland Donor Center.

As a final note, Rachelle felt compelled to mention that, although they shared their special day with the Red Cross through financial donations and promotional table cards, “We still had to have an overall sports theme for the wedding…complete with cake toppers of a ‘baseball batter bride’ and the groom as the pitcher!”

Tim and Rachelle’s wedding was surely an “out of the ballpark” success, and as far as the Red Cross is concerned, this kindhearted couple is truly in a league of their own.

Got A Fever? ...And Not For More Cowbell?

Saturday Night Live jokes aside, fall weather has arrived, meaning cold and flu season! For Red Cross blood donors, cold, flu and other symptoms of illness are listed as our number two most common reason for deferrals.

Check out our Red Cross flu checklist to stay on top of your game, read tips from Red Cross and the (CDC) or even turn to bendy straws and the "Happy Birthday song" to avoid illness!

Heathy people = a healthier blood supply. The only contagious activities the Red Cross wants are your lifesaving blood donations helping those around you and influencing others to donate as well!

Already sick? For the safety of both donors and recipients, if you don't feel well on your day of donation, you should not give blood. But, if you are deferred, you can still make a difference!

Donors may return to donate 24 hours after all symptoms have cleared, so simply allow time to recover from the cold or flu symptoms. You can even plan ahead and schedule your next donation appointment in a couple of weeks!
